Wasp Nest Removal Partington

Partington was a farming village of a few hundred people until the city began moving families out here after the war. Around eight hundred houses went up in the first phase, the population had passed six thousand by 1961, and the old village largely disappeared underneath the new estates. What that leaves is street after street of near-identical two-storey brick housing — and a very consistent set of openings for a queen wasp in spring. Treatment is £60 fixed across the whole of M31.

Where we find nests in Partington

Because so much of the housing here went up to the same pattern at the same time, the nests turn up in the same handful of places:

• Shared fascia and soffit runs. On the terraced blocks the roofline carries on unbroken across four, six or eight houses. A colony that gets behind the timber at one end is flying over one household and entering above another, which is why these calls often come in twos and threes off the same street in the same week.
• Shallow eaves. The estate roofs sit low and tight to the brickwork. That puts a nesting cavity within easy reach of a queen in April, and it also means we can usually treat from a short ladder rather than bringing a tower up the front path. These are among the quickest jobs we do all summer.
• Brick stores, outhouses and flat-roofed porches. Nearly every original block came with an attached store at the back. Most now hold bikes, bins and a spare freezer and get opened twice a season, which is exactly the quiet a growing colony wants.
• Airbricks and ground-level cavities. The frontages along Broadway, Chapel Lane and the roads off Central Road have vents at pavement height. A colony that slips behind one builds inwards into the cavity, out of sight, and the first sign is usually wasps appearing in a downstairs room.
• Open grass, banks and the Moss edge. There is a lot of mown verge and green space between the blocks, and out towards Carrington Moss and the Ship Canal the gardens back onto rough ground and plantation. Ground nests in banks and aerial nests in thick boundary hedging both turn up here, almost always when somebody starts strimming or cutting back.
• The older terraces on Manchester Road and Warburton Lane. The pre-war buildings that survived the rebuilding — the streets near St Mary’s Church, the village green and its old stocks — have softer mortar and deeper eaves than the estate stock, and they behave more like Victorian terraces anywhere else in Trafford.

The fee, fixed

Sixty pounds, fixed, for a wasp or hornet nest. A hornet is simply a large wasp and takes the same treatment at the same price. A bumblebee nest is £70, though the honest answer is very often that a bumblebee colony can be left where it is to die back naturally by autumn, and we will say so rather than sell you a treatment you do not need.

Booking a Partington visit

Numbers build through July and are at their worst across August and September, once the colony stops rearing brood and the workers turn their attention to anything sweet. A nest does not get smaller while you decide what to do about it.
