Ashton upon Mersey keeps its own shape inside M33. The old village sits around St Martin’s church and Ashton Lane, and the conservation area surrounding it protects a run of Victorian and Edwardian villas set well back from the road behind stone-coped brick walls, with beech, lime and sycamore grown tall over the front gardens. • Boundary walls and loose coping. The brick and stone walls along Church Lane and Ashton Lane are old enough to have lost mortar at the top course. A colony slips in beneath a shifted coping stone and builds downwards, completely invisible from the pavement.
• Bargeboards and gable timber. The original softwood trim on the villas shrinks away from the brick as it ages, and on most of these frontages the gap it leaves faces south. Warm, dry and sheltered is precisely the specification a nest is looking for by mid-July.
• Mature trees and wall ivy. Aerial nests build in old sycamore and lime, and in the deep ivy that covers so many garden walls here. These are the nests people discover with a hedge trimmer, which is the worst possible way to find one.
• Coach houses and garden stores. The larger plots off Glebelands Road frequently carry an outbuilding nobody opens between March and September. A nest in one gets to full size before anybody notices it.
• Interwar semis towards Carrington Lane. Different housing, different weak point. The soffit joints and roof-edge gaps on 1930s semis give you a clean flight line to a single spot under the eaves.
• Rough ground near the floodplain. Gardens backing onto the Sale Water Park side, and the land around Ashton on Mersey Golf Club, produce bank and burrow nests in long grass. Most people meet one while mowing.
